Did you miss the medical expense tax credit?
RefundSift checks your Canada tax situation for the medical expense tax credit. Here is what it is, in plain language, with links to the official CRA pages.
Who qualifies
- You, your spouse or common-law partner, or your children under 18 had eligible medical costs (dental, prescriptions, glasses, therapy and more) in any 12-month period ending in the tax year.
- The costs were not reimbursed by an insurance plan, and you did not already claim them.
- Other dependants (for example adult children or parents who rely on you) can be claimed on line 33199.
How much
You claim eligible costs above the lesser of 3% of your net income or a fixed threshold ($2,834 for 2025). The federal credit is a percentage of that excess, plus a provincial or territorial credit.
How far back you can claim
You can ask CRA to change a past return online or with Form T1-ADJ; CRA says a refund cannot be issued for an adjustment request made more than 10 calendar years after the end of the tax year.
