Did you miss the moving expenses deduction?
RefundSift checks your Canada tax situation for the moving expenses deduction. Here is what it is, in plain language, with links to the official CRA pages.
Who qualifies
- You moved to work, run a business, or study full-time at a post-secondary school.
- Your new home is at least 40 km closer (by the shortest public route) to the new work location or school.
- You deduct the costs from income earned at the new location (or, for students, from taxable scholarship or grant income).
How much
A deduction (line 21900, Form T1-M) for costs such as movers, travel, up to 15 days of temporary lodging, and selling your old home. Unused amounts can be carried forward, but not back.
How far back you can claim
You can ask CRA to change a past return online or with Form T1-ADJ; CRA says a refund cannot be issued for an adjustment request made more than 10 calendar years after the end of the tax year.
