Did you miss benefits by not filing a tax return?
RefundSift checks your Canada tax situation for the benefits you only get by filing (CGEB / former GST/HST credit, Canada child benefit). Here is what it is, in plain language, with links to the official CRA pages.
Who qualifies
- You skipped filing a return for one or more years, even with little or no income.
- CRA uses your return to work out the Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit (CGEB, the GST/HST credit before July 2026) and the Canada child benefit.
How much
CRA says if you file a prior-year return late you may still get payments retroactively; for the former GST/HST credit these are now issued as CGEB payments. Amounts depend on your income and family.
How far back you can claim
File the missing years; CRA then works out what you are owed. See the CRA pages below.
