Did you miss the Marriage Allowance?
RefundSift checks your United Kingdom tax situation for the Marriage Allowance. Here is what it is, in plain language, with links to the official HMRC pages.
Who qualifies
- You are married or in a civil partnership (living together is not enough).
- The lower earner has income below their Personal Allowance (usually £12,570).
- The other partner pays basic-rate tax (usually £12,571 to £50,270; in Scotland starter, basic or intermediate rate).
How much
The lower earner transfers £1,260 of Personal Allowance, cutting the partner’s tax by up to £252 a tax year.
How far back you can claim
GOV.UK says you can backdate a claim to 6 April 2022 (the 2022 to 2023 tax year) for any years you were eligible.
